On Sunday 8 April I took part in the 24th edition of the Maratona di Roma. It was the third consecutive year that I ran the marathon in Rome, a place which brings me a lot of joy and peace. I am always renewed and refreshed after a short break in Rome, it helps me be in gratitude for all the blessings I’ve received in my life through the eternal city.
The marathon is a discipline that I’m still learning much about. This year’s race in Rome was my seventh marathon and I was delighted to run a steady pace this time and finish in 259th place in 3:05:09. It was a great experience to once again run around a course that includes almost all the important monuments, streets and squares of Rome. The beautiful weather and great spectator support throughout the 42km event made it a special experience and memory I’ll always cherish.
Running past St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican is always a great part of this race, and this year as I passed the square many pilgrims from around the world were gathered there for celebration of Mass by Pope Francis on the Second Sunday of Easter, otherwise known as Divine Mercy Sunday. I have experienced the mercy and love of God in tangible ways in my life, so it was a special privilege to be running the marathon in Rome at this time, and to give thanks for these gifts and blessings.
Before I left the eternal city after competing in the marathon, I made a short video to share how Rome has helped me to realise the importance of living life to the full, in thanksgiving for the gifts I have, and for all who have supported me on my faith journey.
