Prayer: A Dialogue with God

Another action-filled week at the ESM, I really can’t get over the fact that the weather here resembles an Irish summer at the start of a Roman winter! It is amazing though & helps us all rejoice even more & give thanks for the privilege of being here! We began our study of Sacred Scripture and the Sacraments in the past week so really getting into the depth of theology now, taking the documents of Vatican II & the Cathechism for our reading. I also began planning my project work assisted by a seminarian from the Scottish College here in Rome – it was really great to meet with him to & hear his perspective of study and life in Rome. On Friday evening we were looking after the Liturgy for the International Youth Mass in Centro San Lorenzo in which Monsignor Guido Marini, Papal Master of Ceremonies was the main celebrant. I was part of the Choir and read the English Prayer of the Faithful. Afterwards at the refreshments Msgr. Marini spoke movingly about the privilege of working so closely with Pope Benedict. He described how the recent World Youth Day in Madrid was an occasion of great joy for both himself and the Pope – seeing the enthusiasm of the young people, especially following the storm on the night of the Vigil – he spoke of the beautiful silence during the time of Adoration in particular. He also talked about the importance of dialogue in prayer, having a personal relationship with God and making time for this in our daily lives. A video produced by Vatican TV gives a great insight into our our street evangelisation and visit of Monsignor Marini to the Centro. At the weekend our household groups went for a community weekend outside Rome. It was great to be away from the busyness of the city for a little while! Our group went to Lido beach in the Ostia region along the coast. It was incredible to be swimming in the sea at the end of October! This week our main focus will be on drama and mission preparation for the Dublin Mission, we’ll also be visiting some important sights in Rome & taking part in the Seven Churches Pilgrimage next Saturday taking in all the Basilicas and important churches. We are on the eve of the big celebrations of the Feasts of All Saints & All Souls – I unite my prayers with all of you who have helped me embark on this journey. All you Holy Angels and Saints pray for us!
