In today’s Gospel Jesus explains to the Pharisees that there are no greater commandments in the whole law of God than the commandments of love ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind…You must love your neighbour as yourself’.
The teaching of Jesus reminds us, as modern day followers of Christ, that the commandment of love is still the guiding principle of living the Christian life. When we live in communion with God and with one another, we can live out our Christian vocation fully in happiness and joy.
Today’s Gospel challenges us to love radically and say a renewed yes to Christ; witnessing to his love for us the example of our lives. Our Christian duty is to love, a journey that begins in our own hearts. Each of us as baptised and confirmed Catholics have a role to play in the life of the Church by living out our Christian vocation and sharing the good news of the love and joy of our faith with others. The Spirit dwells in us from the moment of our Baptism and is reinforced through our Confirmation giving us the courage to say yes to God and to live the Christian life with renewed zeal. Inspired by the Holy Spirit we can witness to the love and compassion of Christ in our lives by being faithful to the small everyday tasks and duties of our lives and doing them well.
We should never feel alone or afraid to let Christ more and more into our lives. He promises us that whatever we ask from him we will receive. We can trust completely in Jesus for he promises us his unconditional love. All we need to do is to make space for him in our lives, to receive the gift of his love. It is in the silence of our hearts that we can hear Jesus speak to us in prayer. Can we make times of silence in our lives to truly listen for what Jesus is saying to us? By spending time with him in prayer we can grow in understanding the depth of his love for us, and become better disciples of his love. The Lord wants us to face the future with confidence, trusting in his providence and living the Christian life with him.
